County Commissioner

About Steve
Steve Starnes was born in Rutherford College and raised right here in Burke County. Growing up in a single-parent household, he learned early what perseverance, responsibility, and respect truly mean. Watching his mother work tirelessly to provide for her family instilled in him the values of accountability, hard work, and treating every person with dignity. Those lessons shaped his character—and they continue to guide his leadership.
Experience That Fits the Job
For more than 40 years, Steve built a career in hotel and business management, overseeing budgets, leading teams, and planning for long-term success. He understands how to balance competing priorities, stretch resources wisely, and make tough decisions while keeping operations running smoothly. County government requires the same steady financial stewardship and practical problem-solving—and Steve is prepared to deliver both.
