About Mark Smith

Mark Smith is a Burke County resident, born and raised in the community he now serves. He recently retired after 20 years as a professor of art and design, bringing decades of experience in education to his work. In addition to his time in higher education, Mark has worked directly with local students and families as a school bus driver and Exceptional Children’s monitor. Through these roles, he has seen firsthand what our kids face every day—both in and out of the classroom. He’s built relationships with students across the county and understands that every child learns differently, and every child deserves a chance to succeed.

Mark is running for the Burke County Board of Education because he believes our schools should be focused on students—not bureaucracy. He’s seen the disconnect between decisions made at the top and the reality inside our schools. At a time when families and educators are asking for support, transparency, and common-sense leadership, Mark is stepping up to be a voice for the community and an advocate for doing what’s right for our kids.

Priorities for Burke County Schools

  • Put Students First—Every Time
Decisions should be based on what’s best for students, not convenience or politics.

  • Protect Safe, Supportive Learning Environments
Burke County’s alternative school serves some of our most vulnerable students. Closing it and placing those students into already stretched schools—while citing lack of funding—raises serious concerns about safety, support, and priorities.

  • Demand Accountability for Spending
If there’s “no money” for critical student services, there should not be millions available for administrative building projects. Our budget should reflect our values—and our students should come first.

  • Support Teachers and School Staff
Teachers and staff are being asked to do more with less. They deserve leadership that listens, respects their experience, and provides real support.

  • Increase Transparency and Communication
Parents and community members deserve clear, honest communication about decisions that impact their children and their schools.

  • Strengthen Community Trust in Our Schools
When leadership is transparent and student-focused, trust follows. It’s time to rebuild that trust across Burke County.
